SATURDAY July 20th SAN JACINTO HIKE and Dinner at the Tram Cafeteria.

Message from Su:

Hi everyone. We are going to attempt San Jacinto again next Saturday.

On Saturday July 20, we are hiking San Jacinto from the Tram. The first tram leaves at 8 am, goes about every 20 minutes so we will meet at 6 am. It is almost 100 miles away and there is a fee for parking so we’ll want to carpool.

This is a 10 mile hike with over 2500 foot gain. Altitude is 8500 to 10,800 feet. It is not steep but it is fairly long. This is an out and back route. In the tiny chance you get altitude sickness (headache, nausea, malaise), you would wait on the trail for the rest of the group to go to the peak and pick you up on the way back. I anticipate at least 7-8 hours of hiking, including breaks and lunch. For the hike upwards, we’ll set a timer so that we can break regularly, about every half mile to 1 mile. After the hike, we’ll be eating dinner at the Pines cafeteria at the tram. You can either buy a Ride and Dine ticket for $36 which include an entrée and salad or buy something a la carte at the cafeteria.

Please bring:

1. Comfortable shoes to hike in, poles are not necessary but some people like them.

2. Backpack with 2 liters of water, snacks/lunch, personal first aid kit, sun protection (hat, sunblock, sunglasses), extra clothes that are not cotton. Weather is cooler up at altitude. A hooded windbreaker is an ideal layer just in case there is light rain. A garbage bag also works in a pinch to protect you from rain. So far the weather has been high in the 70’s, low in the 60’s up there so quite warm during the day. As a habit, I bring clothes like a jacket I might need if I were lost and stuck outside at night.

3. flashlight/headlamp. Unlikely we’ll be hiking in the dark but I always pack one just in case.

4. If you use a hiking app like alltrails , please download your maps for San Jacinto from tram BEFORE the hike. Map My Hike is useful to track your hike and can do it in airplane mode but is not for navigation. If you’re curious about altitude, there is a free app called altimeter which will tell you how high you are.

First tram is at 8 am and they do not sell those tickets in advance. Tickets are $27 roundtrip (there may be a AAA discount so bring your card), $36 for ride and dine which includes a dinner (entrée and salad) at the pines cafeteria after 4:30 pm. See menu below:

https://www.pstramway.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/04/Pines-Ride-and-Dine-11.07.2015.pdfRide & Dine – Home – Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

only Trans Fat Free oils and natural fats in the cooking of all menu items. Braised and glazed in a smoky bbq sauce Salad With Choice of Ranch Dressing, Bleu Cheese, Balsamic Vinaigrette

Carpool: This is dependent on who is going. Below are some possibilities.

A north route via 57 north to 60 west to 10 west to CA-111. Meeting place is Carpool lot at 100 N Diamond Bar Blvd near 57/60 freeways

A south route via 91 west to 60 west to 10 west to CA-111. Meeting place is ???Ed’s house in Yorba Linda or somewhere along the 91 freeway. This will have to be clarified by Ed and anyone who chooses this route.

If you are interested in going, let me know which route you want to carpool. you can email me at gosugo@hotmail.com or tell me if you see me.
