Sunday Hike (September 16th)
Ice House Canyon hike
When:
Meet at Brea carpool lot on Lambert, west of 57 freeway at 5:30 am. or meet at trailhead at 6:30 am. Please bring an Adventure Pass if you have one. We will carpool.
What should I bring?
1.5-2 liters of water. Less if you are a camel, more if you drink like a fish. Generally aim to bring more than you think you’ll need. Estimated hiking time is around 5 hours total.
Lots of snacks or even a light lunch. We will have 5 minutes breaks along the route and a 15-30 minute break at the saddle which is our final destination. We may go to Claro’s Italian deli, Corky’s restaurant, or Chipotle after the hike.
Extra clothes: the estimated weather is in the 50’s when we start and 70’s when we finish.
Even though it will get very warm, I would bring a light jacket or warm long sleeve top.
First Aid kit, personal stuff you might need like inhaler, advil, allergy meds
Sun protection: hat, sunglasses, sunblock as we’ll be out for hours
Hiking boots or shoes. Trail shoes are OK.
Backpack to carry all this stuff.
Hiking poles are optional for this hike. Not truly necessary but some people prefer them especially if they have bad knees.
Dogs are allowed on this trail but it might get a little warm for them and I don’t know if the restaurants have outdoor seating.
What are the 10 essentials?
This is a list of 10 items that are recommended while hiking including water, food, clothes, sun protection, maps/compass or gps, first aid kid, flashlight, things to make a fire, emergency shelter.
I carry them on all hikes. A hiking group should have all the items between the members. The general concept is you are bringing stuff you will need to survive an unexpected night out if you get lost. So even if it’s a hot day, I’ll bring a jacket because I’ll be cold if I get lost and in the mountains at night. I have a friend who got lost on Mount Baldy and spent the night there. He was sorry he didn’t brought a jacket, flashlight, enough water, map, etc.
See y’all Sunday really really early.
