ICE HOUSE CANYON HIKE on SUNDAY SEPT 16th
Message from Su:
On Sunday, September 16th, the 2nd hike of our “let’s get back into hiking shape: Part Deux” series will be to ICE HOUSE CANYON. This is one of my favorite hikes and that’s why I’m repeating this one.
The hike is over 7 miles, 2600 feet gain, and at an altitude of 5000-7500 feet, located on the way up to Mount Baldy. Considered a “moderate” hike to regular hikers, it is dog friendly and has a decent amount of shade.
According to some guy’s website, estimated hiking time is 4.5 hours but I would give it over 5 hours since we’ll be going slow and taking breaks, including lunch. If you look on the website below, there’s picture of snow but there is no snow in the summer. As this is a moderate hike that will take hours, I would recommend a backpack with 1.5-2 liters of water, lunch, snacks, sunscreen/hat/sunglasses, hiking boots or trail shoes (trail runners OK), personal first aid kit with any meds you require like inhaler, epipen, extra clothes (i.e. lightweight jacket).
Again we will have to meet at 5:30 am to get to the trailhead by 6:30 am to get parking and hopefully avoid some heat. We will be meeting at the Brea park and ride carpool lot on Lambert at 5:30 am. The lot is in between the 57 freeway and State College Blvd, on the north side of Lambert. From 57 north freeway, take Lambert exit, make a left and the lot is on your right side.
Please email me if you are coming at gosugo@hotmail.com and include info like if you have an adventure pass or want to drive, coming from an area not near Brea. We need to arrange carpools as parking is still hard to find at the trailhead and requires an adventure pass. If you live north of Brea, I suggest you carpool separately with someone like Elaine who lives in La Verne instead of meeting in Brea.
As for the 3rd hike of our series, it will be San Jacinto. Then we may eventually do something harder after that like Wilson, Baldy or the three T’s. Possibly Mount Whitney in summer 2019 if I can win the lottery for a permit.
