A message from Rick received Saturday : “The streak continues! Today was day 414 with a total mileage of 1134.5 miles. Just a light rain this morning with a temp of 40, so I was able to get in 4.2 miles. Yesterday was the worst conditions of the streak. A pounding driving rain with winds of 25+ with even stronger gusts. It was hard to stay upright! Not to mention running uphill into the wind. They’re calling for similar conditions tomorrow, so it will no doubt be a shorter run. Karen & I are planning a trip south the first week in February,so I will plan on joining the Saturday run on Feb. 4th. “

Brea Runners,

Tomorrow morning is our hike. Most of us will be meeting at 6 am at Snails Pace parking lot and will be carpooling to the trail head, while few will be driving from home and meetings us at the trail head. You can punch in Sam Merrill Trailhead, Altadena and get directions to that. See below for directions.

From the 210 West, exit Lake avenue and make a right, going north and uphill towards the mountains. The trail head is where Lake Street ends and takes a sharp left turn and that street is Loma Alta. Parking is along Lake and neighboring streets.   There is a large gate on the right side which marks where we’re meeting. We’re going to meet at the gate at 7:15 am. We will wait for everyone to get there before starting the hike. Text if you are running late.

Since there is no bathroom on the trail, many of us are stopping at the McDonald’s at Lake avenue along the route. Address is 799 N Lake Ave, Pasadena, CA 91104. There is a Starbucks in the area if you prefer to stop there instead. We’re not meeting or waiting for anyone at McDonald’s but we’ll run into each other. Just go to the bathroom, buy a coffee or hash brown and spend no more than 5-10 minutes there before heading back up Lake Street.

Don’t forget to wear comfortable hiking shoes, bring your water, food, jacket and another layer like a thin fleece or long sleeve shirt. It feels cold only when you stop hiking. Do not wear cotton or denim. Your polyester/synthetic running clothes are fine for hiking.

We’ll take several breaks along the route and go at a leisurely pace because this is supposed to be fun and not a race. Website says hike takes 4.75 hours but I’m estimating 6.5 hours including our breaks (5 minutes along route, 15 minutes at hotel ruins, 30 minutes at Inspiration point).

See you tomorrow.

Brea Runners Hike – Sunday January 15, 2017:

We will be hiking Inspiration Point in Altadena at a leisurely pace and take breaks. The total distance is just over 10 miles. We will take a 30 to 45 minutes break at Inspiration Point before turning around. We expect the hike to take around 6 hours. The hike will be cancelled if it rains on Saturday or Sunday. Check the link below for more information about the trail.

http://www.modernhiker.com/2007/10/02/hiking-echo-mountain-and-inspiration-point/

So far 10 Brea Runners and friends will be participating. Let us know if you plan on joining us. We wil be meeting Sunday morning at Snails Pace at 6 am and carpool to the trailhead.

Some recommendations on what to bring on this hike:

1. Hiking shoes/trail runners. you can wear hiking boots if you like but they can be heavy.

2. Hiking poles if you use them but not necessary as no part of this hike is too steep.

3. Water, 2 to 3 liters depending on how much you drink while exercising.

4. Low weight snacks with high calories like candy, granola, raisins, chips, pretzels, and biscuits.

 5. Sandwich for lunch.  There is seating at Inspiration Point and we’ll spend up to 30-45 minutes there.

5. Sun protection-hat, sunglasses, sunblock.

6. Extra clothing- Water resistant outer layer like a windbreaker and long sleeve shirt.

7. Polyester clothing is best. Avoid cotton clothing in general.

8. Personal first aid kid- like your asthma inhaler, ibuprofen, leg cramp pills, you epi pen if you’re allergic to bees, anti-diarrhea meds, etc.

8. Bathroom supplies- toilet tissue,  small plastic bags, small shovel. No bathrooms and trash cans available on this hike.

9. Backpack to carry all.
